The Cape Town Baroque Orchestra presents an exciting programme of vocal and instrumental music by George Frideric Handel (1685?1759), celebrating this giant of the late Baroque. The centre-piece of the programme is Handel’s Gloria, sung by Lynelle Kenned, and it also includes an organ concerto by Handel as well as several concerti grossi, played by members of the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra as soloists. Many of Handel’s organ concerti and concerti grossi were written to be performed between the acts of his oratorios. Whilst the keyboard concerto was a new genre of the time, and centred around Handel as composer-performer, the concerto grosso harks back to a previous generation, but was stylistically updated by Handel in several innovative ways. The programme will be directed from the harpsichord by the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra’s Artistic Director, Erik Dippenaar.
The 18th Greyton Genadendal Classics for All Festival takes place from 20 – 22 May.
